TRAVELER '01 Traveler '01 is the latest of the annual compilations from Six Degrees Records, and like its acclaimed predecessors, it is a quilt of many colors, bound together by the vision of producer and label co-founder Bob Duskis. From leading electronica artist State of Bengal to the legendary Cuban percussionist Patato, Traveler '01 offers a musical journey with a point of view. "It's emblematic of what we're about," Duskis explains; "crossing musical boundaries and refusing to be put in any musical box." With Karsh Kale's personal brand of East Asian trip-hop, Monica Ramos' ambient pop, and Zuco 103's urban approach to Brazilian samba, Traveler '01 covers a lot of ground. But this is not some loosely-knit patchwork of dissimilar materials. "When we started Six Degrees," Duskis explains, "I saw this exciting thing happening - but it wasn't being heard here in the States; it was mostly in Europe. The idea was taking music from other parts of the world, other cultures, and mixing it with electronica and dance music." Duskis is quick to distinguish this from the phenomenon where European producers used token ethnic samples (often uncredited and unpaid) to create dance hits with an exotic flavor. "Now," he points out, "with the technology so accessible, you have Brazilian producers, African musicians - the cultures themselves - participating in this fusion." TRAVELER '00 Last year, as the world whipped itself up into a millennial frenzy, the Six Degrees Travel Series was busy releasing a crop of genre-defying records from around the planet. Brazilian beats mixed it up with electronic percussion, Indian classical players performed to DJ-programmed beats, musicians and producers from many different locations and backgrounds made a beautiful noise together and somehow it all seemed perfectly natural. We think it's a short and immensely pleasurable trip from what you're familiar with to something brand new. Traveler '00 features twelve such journeys culled from our Travel Series releases as well as some favorite tracks from like-minded labels around the globe. Don't worry if you find yourself in new sonic terrain...everything is closer than you think. TRAVELER '99 The comedian Steven Wright jokes, "it's a small world, but I wouldn't want to paint it." The fact of the matter is, it's a HUGE world filled with a dizzying amount of amazing music. At Six Degrees, we are fascinated by the way technology has brought the sounds of different cultures through our speakers and into our everyday lives. Love it or hate it, the digital sampler has become a sort of musical blender, allowing producers to mix up everything from Senegalese chants to cantors to Hindustani ragas and Bossa Nova crooning into some new kind of elixir. Like most technological breakthroughs, the potential for abuse is enormous, but in the right hands, magic happens. The tracks on Traveler '99 are produced by some of our favorite magicians. We hope they take you, like us, to uncharted territories where a planetful of sounds exists together. - Bob Duskis/Six Degrees
